Compared to traditional reinforced concrete structures, steel structures have been increasingly widely used in low-rise, high-rise, and super-high-rise buildings due to their significant performance advantages. However, with the continuous emergence of modern steel structure materials and buildings, the performance of steel has become a focal point in the construction of steel structures. The following article briefly discusses several basic requirements for the selected steel when constructing steel structures, urging relevant professionals to pay attention.

Additional Requirements for Steel under Specific Conditions

Depending on the specific working conditions of the used steel structure, such as exposure to corrosive media, including atmospheric corrosion, low temperatures, fatigue conditions, etc., corresponding requirements must be imposed on the steel.

1. High Strength Requirement for Steel:
Steel structures demand high yield strength and tensile strength from the steel to reduce the cross-section of steel components. This helps save steel and lower costs while providing structural safety. The yield-to-tensile strength ratio reflects the magnitude of the design strength. A smaller ratio indicates higher strength. However, it is essential to control the ratio moderately to avoid low steel strength utilization, which may be uneconomical.

2. Good Processing Performance Requirement for Steel:
Steel structures require steel to be suitable for cold and hot processing and exhibit good weldability. Processing should not significantly impact strength, plasticity, and toughness. Therefore, a cold bending test is necessary to evaluate the ability of steel to resist cracking during plastic deformation at room temperature. Cold bending performance is a crucial indicator for assessing a steel’s ability to undergo plastic deformation under complex stress states.

3. Adequate Deformation Capacity Requirement for Steel:
Steel structures require steel to have good plasticity and impact toughness. The plastic deformation capacity of steel is reflected through elongation. High elongation in steel is crucial for adjusting local peak stresses, redistributing stress, and reducing structural brittle failure. Therefore, yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation are the three essential mechanical performance indicators required for load-bearing steel structures. Additionally, impact toughness refers to the ability of steel to absorb energy when fracturing under impact loads, serving as another mechanical performance indicator for resisting low temperatures and stress concentrations.

As the quality of steel directly affects the stability and service life of the entire steel structure building, including the personal safety of occupants, strict control over the selection of steel is crucial to avoid major safety incidents and enhance the safety of steel structure buildings. Professionals involved in the field are urged to exercise strict control over the selection of steel.
